Through student engagement, meaningful conversations take place between and among students and teachers. By constantly verbalizing their ideas, students construct meaning and self-organize their learning experiences. To increase student engagement, the following activities are suggested:

-Teacher training and support.
-Collaborative teams with a clear focus on how to implement student engagement strategies.

Authentic audiences! As an English teacher focused on global competencies as well as writing and speaking, I find that when students have an audience and purpose that is real, they are more intrinsically motivated and I don’t have to do as much work to motivate them. Essay competitions, our cross-cultural blog with students in Morocco, school-wide poetry slams, and projects presented to the entire community tend to motivate them more than an assignment for which I am their only audience.
